This year our class is taking on the challenge of trying to solve some of the issues that have plagued our globe over the past twenty years. This page is designed to record our journey along the way as well as serve as a dumping ground for any information that we may come across as we begin and continue to research a possible solution.

Global Issue #1: Recycling

The following document will serve as a template for you to follow as you go along and begin organizing you information.

Global Issue #1: Recycling

Background of Issue: (who?, what?, where?, when?, why?)

WHO ARE THE PEOPLE WHO STARTED RECYCLING?- Pat Cosby lives in Columbus, Georgia.
(our home state!!) It all started when he went to throw away some paper and found that all 10 trash cans were full. He then decided that he would fix this. HE collected all the papers and blueprints for one whole month. He collected the paper from the trash cans every day and put it on his desk. His desk was so covered with papers that he could not even see his desk yet. He took the paper to a paper recycling bin and told his co-workers to do so too. They found in their archive room 400 pounds of paper that they then recycled. Pat was really enjoying this. The company soon began to recycle aluminum cans, plastic, paper, cardboard, bottles, floppy disks, and CDs. Then they took the burnt out florescent lights and returned them to Home Depot. Around Christmas time Pat would see things on the curb that needed to be recycled. That frustrated him so he decided to start a community wide Christmas wrapping paper recycling program. Pat continues to recycle every year.

WHAT IS BEING RECYCLED?- So many things can be recycled. Things you would expect and things you wouldn't.Cardboard, Magazines, Office Paper, Newspapers, Paperboard, Paper Cardboard Dairy and Juice Cartons, junk Mail, Phone Books, Printer Cartridges, paper back books, Frozen food boxes, envelopes,
Glass Bottles, Plastic Dairy Tubs, Aluminum Cans, Toner cartridges: printer and copier, Plastic Bottles, appliances, construction debris, Christmas trees, grass clippings, refrigerators, scrap metal, cleaning products, Batteries, Aerosol cans, computer monitors, televisions, and other electronic devices, Fluorescent lamps and ballasts, Laboratory Chemicals, oils, Paints, Solvents, Thinners, and more. To find out what is being recycled near you call your local recycling center.

WHERE ARE PEOPLE NOT RECYCLING?- In New Jersey, people only recycle bottles and newspapers when they can recycle so much more! In Las Vegas, they do not follow the bottle bill. Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Iowa, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New York, Oregon, and Vermont have passed laws that establish deposits or refund values on beverage containers while other jurisdictions rely on recycling goals or landfill bans of recyclable materials. Some cities, such as New York City and Seattle have created laws that enforce fines upon citizens who throw away certain recyclable materials. States with landfill bans of recyclables include Wisconsin,Minnesota,Michigan and North Carolina. The first recycling mill was Waste Techniques, built in Conshohocken, Pennsylvania.

WHY DO PEOPLE NOT RECYCLE?: People don't recycle because it is inconvenient or they don't know anything about it. It is inconvenient because recyclable products have to be put in a separate bin than the regular trash and most of it has to be washed out before being put in the bin. Some people don't know how to recycle or how to get started. (Where to get a recycling bin, what to put in it, where to put then bin when it is full, etc.) You can get a recycling bin by calling you Community Waste Services. Once they have your address, a recycling will be delivered to your residence.

brochure- how to start recycling

WHEN DID RECYCLING START?- Recycling started in America around the late 1960's. It was a small thing but it grew a lot more up until the 1980's, then it really became known. In Great Britain they started to recycle paper in 1921. The first U.S. recognized recycling program was founded in 1895 by Col. E Waring Jr. Recycling has been going on for a long time, as far back as 400 B.C. Recycling as we know it today most likely occurred in Europe first, where people melted down scrap bronze and other metals to reuse.

WHEN DID RECYCLING START IN GEORGIA?

The American recycling movement began in the late 1960. Enveromental groups began to stress recycling because they believed that Americans were consuming too much of the world's resorses- trees, minerals, fuel, and wate. Recyling efforts dwindled because the 60s and 70s market for recyclables was not substantial and recyling efforts dwindled.

Costs: human and/or financial cost?

It costs $28 per ton for waste in a landfill.
It costs $147 per ton to recycle.
We save $600 in financial and environmental costs.
When opening recycling plants we create more jobs,
these jobs help homelessness and unemployment rates. YAY(:

Previous Efforts Put Into Place to Help Resolve Issue:

People have put up recycling bins. Also people have made many rights or laws.
Some states have a lot of recycling laws like Maine, Vermont, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Hawaii, California, and Oregan.

Reasons why previous efforts to help resolve issue have failed:

Americans are lazy

Areas of concern on reaching your desired solution to the global issue:

Helping Americans overcome their laziness

YOUR PLAN OF ACTION! (for this section, you will need to provide the most detail as you lay a step-by-step plan on how your group will go about tackling this issue. It is important that you take a look at all the information you have researched and studied and use that information to develop a true, realistic and effective plan of action. The plan needs to include funding, people involved, time length of project, materials needed, etc…)`Georian
